O'Connell's Weekly Beat

1-28-2019
Hey Wonderful Choir families!

A big thank you to those who came out to our parents meeting last Friday, January 25, 2019. As promised here is the general competition season information as well as chaperone information. If you want to be a chaperone please email me. Our first competition on March 2nd will be a long day, especially for Marquis who will be coming back at 1:45 A.M. It will be worth it since we were given free tickets to watch the Tier 1 (AAA) chorale groups perform.

Envelopes for our Spaghetti Dinner were sent out last week. Please buy tickets, it will be an amazing time! We have a wonderful group of parents who are creating this event. This can be a HUGE money maker for us. If each student (family) sold between 3 to 5 tickets we could make between $3,000 to $5,000. Please ask your student for the envelope and refer to it for details.

On February 27th, we will be programing our light shows for the competition set during the school day. I need parents to come watch how we are going to setup the lighting towers as well as how the programing works. I will not be able to run these lights during the season so I need some parents to do that for our shows. If you are able to come to all of our competitions and want to be a part of our tech crew, please come on the 27th.

I thank you all for your outstanding support as we go into competition season. If you have costume donations, please turn those in as soon as you can. It would be great to have them all by this Wednesday. If you are unable to donate we will rent out the costumes to you. Please let me know so I can give you a rental agreement. No matter if you rent or donate, your student will get a costume for competition season. I need to have a response for each student before I rent or give out costumes to all the students.

I hope you all have an amazing week.

Best,
Vince O’Connell

Diamond Bar High School Show Choir Competition Information

Competition Season General Information:

Competition season is when show choirs from all over the country gather to perform the sets that they have been working tirelessly on. They also get to share their sets with others, meet people from all over the country, and get adjudicated by professionals in the business. The So-Cal competition season starts in early February and ends mid to late April.

Our students will get to perform at 4 prestigious competitions. They will grow not only as performers, but as young adults. The lessons learned during a show choir competition season cannot be matched in any other high school or even collegiate program.

Chaperone Information

If you’re interested in Chaperoning, this section is for you! In order to make our competitions a safe and successful opportunity for our students, we need chaperones to help with managing students.

Here are our student rules for competition:
Rule 1: Students are to watch each choir.
Rule 2: Students are to tell a chaperone that they’re going to grab food or go to the bathroom.
Rule 3: Students need to be in at least a pair if they’re going to exit the theater.
Rule 4: No students can leave the competition early without prior authorization.

For Chaperones I would like to have at least one of you to check outside every once and a while. Please keep an eye on all students. If they’re walking away without prior authorization, stop them or let me know what the situation is. If any student is having a medical emergency let me know and let our hosts or nurse at the competition know. You will all receive my cell number to contact me. There will be a separate chaperone meeting in the future before competition season.

Tech Crew and Set Design

For the first time ever, Diamond Bar Show Choir will be traveling and competing with state of the art show lighting. This will give us the greatest edge for competition season and allow our students to perform with professional equipment. With all this tech, we need help. I already have a few tech members, but I still need some from our parents. If you’re interested please come to school all day on Wednesday, February 27th. This will be the first time we set our show with the lighting and also teach tech parents and students to work with the lighting as well as run it during competition season. I need at least one person to run the lighting each competition set. Tech parents will also be managing some students.
Thank you all for your support this year. Our groups have improved so much and our program is growing rapidly. If you have any questions you’re always welcome to email me at vO’Connell@wvusd.k12.ca.us. I am incredibly excited for a successful competition season!
